The Coronavirus : Through the Eyes of a CF Mom

While this may be the first time many find themselves hoarding

hand-sanitizer and face masks,

this is nothing out of the ordinary for families with medically fragile children. The anxiety everyone is feeling about the coronavirus unfortunately is nothing new either. Having children with a chronic disease means that we are on high alert always, especially during cold and flu season. This past week I went to a previously scheduled appointment and on the door it encouraged patients with flu-like symptoms not to enter and instead call to reschedule their appointment. Has this happened before? No. Should it happen every flu season? I think, YES!

I have seen more people/businesses cleaning surfaces, wiping down door handles, wearing gloves and seeking out hand-sanitizer. I have seen a change that I hope stays with us all.

3 Things I hope that we can all take away from this epidemic //

More to #3 - Your boss will appreciate your concern for others if you have to stay home with that sick little. I’m also willing to bet the parents of all of the kids in your child’s class/daycare will be endlessly thankful you didn’t potentially put their children in danger.

It’s my hope that once this has become a thing of the past,

we not let our new hygienic habits and concern for others leave us.

This virus presents us with the unique opportunity to “walk in someone else's shoes” for a few weeks/months. Let’s continue to be aware of the needs of the elderly, immunocompromised, premature and chronically ill. Just because a medical diagnosis may not directly impact some families doesn’t mean we can’t all live to make sure everyone gets a fighting chance at a more health-filled life!
